Chelsea were able to qualify for the Champions League after beating Nottingham Forest 1-0 at the City Ground.

Levi Colwill scored the only goal of the game, netting early in the second half. It was only his third goal for Chelsea, but it was easily his most important one.

Before the match, Colwill explained that Chelsea had a gameplan to beat Forest, with everything coming together in the end.

Analysing Forest’s defending in the build-up to the defender’s tap-in, former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson was not too impressed.

Paul Robinson on Levi Colwill goal

Chelsea fans praised Colwill after his performance against Newcastle United earlier this month, and they would have been satisfied with his display at the City Ground.

For Robinson, though, he will not score an easier goal, with the retired England international not convinced by how Nuno Espirito Santo’s men defended against Colwill.

Commentating on the game for the BBC, Robinson said: “It’s an empty net for Levi Colwill at the far post. Matz Sels comes running out of his goal to close the angle down.

“There’s nobody around Colwill, it’s one of the easiest goals he’ll ever have to score.”

It had been claimed that Chelsea may have had to sell Colwill and Reece James if they failed to qualify for the Champions League. But that is obviously something that fans no longer have to worry about.

Levi Colwill unplayable against Nottingham Forest

Colwill scored Chelsea’s all-important goal, but the England international also defended extremely well.

According to Sofascore, Colwill made six clearances and was not dribbled past once. Chris Wood has been one of the best strikers in the Premier League this season, but Colwill and Tosin Adarabioyo did not give the big centre-forward much of a sniff.

The Blues are being linked with several central defenders ahead of the summer transfer window, but there is no doubt that Colwill will continue to be a starter under Enzo Maresca next term.

Next up for Chelsea is the Conference League final against Real Betis. If the Blues win that, it will be their first piece of silverware under Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali.

Their season will not end there, though, with Chelsea participating at the Club World Cup, which begins next month.
