Chelsea are notorious for spending so much money in the transfer market, yet the club also know how to spot a bargain.
For example, they paid just £40m to sign Cole Palmer from Premier League rivals Manchester City in 2023.
Palmer has been a revelation for Chelsea, scoring 40 goals since arriving at the club. Chelsea currently deem Palmer “unsellable”.
Three years prior, the Blues also picked up Thiago Silva on a free transfer, an incredible piece of business. Fast forward to now, and they have another opportunity to bring in a world-class player for nothing.
Chelsea should re-sign Kevin De Bruyne
Former Chelsea attacking midfielder Kevin De Bruyne played his final home game for City on Tuesday, with the Belgian leaving the Etihad at the end of the season when his contract expires.
De Bruyne may be 33 now, but he could be the perfect addition to Enzo Maresca‘s side. The fact that he is 33 can actually be considered a good thing if you are Chelsea.
Chelsea’s squad is a very young one and could do with the experience of someone like De Bruyne. The Belgium international would still bring a lot to the Blues’ attack as well, which is the most important thing.
According to WhoScored, De Bruyne has averaged 2.1 key passes per game in the Premier League this season, which is the highest in Pep Guardiola’s squad. In total, he has scored four goals and provided seven assists in 27 top-flight appearances.
De Bruyne is not putting up the sort of numbers that he used to, but it is clear that he can still break down a defence.
Chelsea face low blocks most weeks, so De Bruyne would be a great weapon to have. Whether Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali would sign off on signing someone who is about to turn 34, though, remains to be seen.
Chelsea have discussed re-signing Kevin De Bruyne
Chelsea sold De Bruyne to Wolfsburg for £18m, but it looks like they have thought about re-signing him more than 11 years later.
In April, it was claimed that Chelsea had discussed bringing De Bruyne back to the club, though doing so does not appear to be a priority.
It is something that Chelsea should continue thinking about, however, as the City playmaker would address a couple of key issues they currently have.
