Chelsea recorded an important 1-0 victory on Friday night against a Manchester United side that included Mason Mount.

Even though Chelsea were miles from their best, they picked up a vital three points in the Premier League to boost their chances of securing Champions League qualification for next season.

In their final home game of the campaign, the Blues beat Man Utd 1-0 at Stamford Bridge courtesy of Marc Cucurella’s header in the 71st minute.

The result means that Enzo Maresca’s side are now up to fourth in the Premier League table. If they win away at Nottingham Forest on the final day of the season, they’ll be competing in next year’s Champions League.

The main story of Chelsea against Man Utd was the Champions League race, but the return of former Blues star Mason Mount was a minor subplot.

Chelsea fans bring the heat on Mason Mount

It’s nearly two years since Chelsea sold Mount to Man Utd in July 2023, but the Blues fanbase are still not pleased with their academy graduate after his exit.

During Friday night’s match, Sky Sports journalist Gary Cotterill highlighted that the home supporters inside Stamford Bridge were chanting ‘Chelsea reject’ to the 26-year-old attacking midfielder throughout the match.

He said via Sky Sports (8:40pm, 16 May): “Mason Mount getting the ‘Chelsea reject’ chant, and roundly booed whenever he touches the ball.”

Mount was returning to the Bridge for the second time because he played when Chelsea beat Man Utd 4-3 in a Premier League classic in April 2024. Incidentally, Chelsea fans mocked Mason Mount on that day as well.

It’s a real shame that the Cobham product has seen his reputation tarnished with a lot of the Blues fanbase.

Mason Mount performance vs Chelsea

Despite the fact Man Utd face Tottenham in the Europa League final next Wednesday, Ruben Amorim selected a very strong starting XI for Friday night’s trip to West London.

Mount was part of the line-up against Chelsea, so it’ll be interesting to see if he starts the European final.

Here is a look at how he performed against his former club:

Mount went close to silencing his boo boys in the second half when his left-footed shot inside the penalty box went just wide. Apart from that, he couldn’t make too much of an impact.
