Vice President JD Vance revealed Monday his ‘best friend’ in President Donald Trump’s cabinet, and also shared his thoughts about running for president in 2028.
The vice president was asked by Fox News host Martha MacCallum in an interview about a recent comment from Trump about theoretical Republican nominees to be successor.
During Sunday’s interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, host Kristen Welker asked him about potential standard bearers for the MAGA movement in his absence.
Trump replied, ‘You look at Marco, you look at JD Vance, who’s fantastic.’
Secretary of State Marco Rubio is a rising star in the administration, as Trump has given him three extra jobs: acting administrator for USAID, acting lead archivist, and acting national security adviser.
As the vice president, Vance is the most obvious choice to succeed Trump, but Rubio has impressed the president and his supporters because of his loyalty.
‘I don’t want to get involved in that,’ Trump said about Vance. ‘I think he is a fantastic brilliant guy, Marco is great, there is a lot of them that is great, I also see tremendous unity.’
Vance indicated to MacCallum he was not concerned about any political rivalry with Rubio.

‘He is probably my best friend in the administration,’ Vance said. ‘We hang out and talk all the time.’
Vance also praised Rubio for ‘doing a really good job’ in the Trump administration and said that the president was not preparing to endorse his successor for quite some time.
Both Rubio and Vance were close competitors during the 2024 campaign to serve as Trump’s running mate, but the president ultimately selected Vance, a much younger and less experienced politician.
Vance sidestepped the question about running for president himself in 2028.

‘We have to do a good job for the American people and if we do that the politics will take care of themselves,’ he said.
Trump told Welker he felt the Republican was full of stars who would make great presidents in four years.
‘I could name 10, 15, 20 people right now just sitting here,’ he said.
Trump added that despite ‘so many people’ wanting him to run for a third term, he was not ‘looking’ to run for president again.
‘I’m looking to have four great years and turn it over to somebody and turn it over to somebody, ideally a great Republican to carry it forward,’ Trump said.
