The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has uncovered a sophisticated drug trafficking operation involving the concealment of cocaine in traditional Nigerian ceremonial clothing, specifically caps known as ‘fila’ and female headgears called ‘gele,’ commonly worn as part of ‘aso-ebi’ attire.

The revelation was made public by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi on Sunday, May 18. Babafemi shared images and video footage of the seized materials, highlighting the ingenuity of traffickers and issuing a strong caution to the public.

“In case you’re asked to help take as part of your luggage to Europe or elsewhere any aso-ebi fila and gele (traditional male cap and female headgear), the latest seizure of cocaine concealed in such materials uncovered by #ndlea_nigeria will make you think twice,” Babafemi wrote.

The agency’s latest operation is part of its ongoing crackdown on drug smuggling networks, which have become increasingly creative in their methods. This bust comes shortly after the NDLEA intercepted an oil tanker that had been modified with a hidden compartment designed for drug trafficking across Nigeria.

Authorities are urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and avoid carrying unfamiliar packages abroad, especially under the guise of transporting clothing or cultural items. The NDLEA reiterated its commitment to dismantling drug syndicates and protecting the country from the harmful effects of narcotics.
