The United Nations has condemned the United States’ recent military strikes in Iran, calling it a dangerous escalation that could severely undermine global peace and security.

The rebuke comes just days after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly attempted to distance Washington from Israel’s ongoing conflict with Iran. However, in a sharp reversal on Sunday, Trump confirmed that American forces had carried out airstrikes on three nuclear sites in Iran, warning that Iran “will get hit again” if it does not pursue peace.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern over the development, describing it as a destabilising move in an already volatile region. In a statement posted on the social platform X, Guterres said: “I am gravely alarmed by the use of force by the United States against Iran today. This is a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge – and a direct threat to international peace and security.”

He added, “There is a growing risk that this conflict could rapidly get out of control – with catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region, and the world.” Guterres called on all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint to prevent further bloodshed.

The U.S. military operation follows a string of retaliatory strikes between Iran and Israel. On June 13, Israel launched a large-scale offensive targeting Iran’s military infrastructure, including nuclear sites and high-ranking personnel. In response, Iran fired a barrage of missiles into Israeli territory, killing three people and injuring at least 21 others in the Coastal Plains region.

Tensions have soared in recent weeks, with both nations accusing each other of aggression and issuing threats of continued retaliation. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has vowed that Israel’s actions “will not go unanswered.”

The escalating conflict has raised alarm across the international community, with growing fears that the situation could spiral into a wider regional war.
