A family was hit by a train in Ohio, killing at least two people as a child is believed to have been launched into a nearby river.

Police confirmed multiple people were struck on railroad tracks in Fremont on Sunday around 7pm.

Officials said emergency efforts are underway, as fire fighters, police and water rescue teams flocked to the scene near the Miles Newton Bridge where the train passes over.

It is unclear what transpired leading up to the tragic incident, but authorities have confirmed a mother and a daughter, aged 58 and 32, have died, according to Fremont Mayor Danny Sanchez.

A five-year-old child is still missing and believed to have fallen into the Sandusky River. Dive teams are searching the water.

A one-year-old was rushed to the hospital from the scene, according to Sanchez. The baby’s condition is unclear.

The mayor said the victims were a family visiting from Fort Wayne, Indiana for a fishing trip.

The Miles Newton Bridge was closed, but reopened around 10:30pm. Officials have urged people to avoid the area as the investigation persists.
