Even though Reece James is the club captain, one Chelsea teammate would love to wear the armband.

It’s widely discussed that the Chelsea squad is full of mainly young players, which is why they’re crying out for some more leadership and experience.

Reece James, 25, is the Blues captain after taking over from Cesar Azpilicueta in 2023. When James hasn’t been available this season, 24-year-old star Enzo Fernandez has covered as the skipper on the pitch.

John Terry’s advice to Reece James is that he needs to lead Chelsea in his own way, adding that he’s doing a good job.

Interestingly, a Blues teammate would love the opportunity to captain at Stamford Bridge.

Levi Colwill desperate to become Chelsea captain

It’s been claimed that Levi Colwill has his heart set on captaining Chelsea in the future.

The 22-year-old central defender certainly has a close association with the club after joining the Blues at the Under-9 age group. Eventually, he made his way through the Chelsea academy to the first-team squad, which included some useful loan spells as well.

According to The Sun, Colwill bleeds blue and would ‘love’ to be Chelsea captain.

A Stamford Bridge source told The Sun: “Levi has been at Chelsea for years. He has the DNA of Chelsea in his blood. And he has that winner’s mentality. He would LOVE to be captain. His natural character is to lead. He tries his best to push his mentality.”

Levi Colwill’s record in Chelsea’s first team

Colwill, who earns £100,000-a-week (Spotrac), is definitely growing in stature as a player.

It’s interesting to note that he’s part of Chelsea’s six-man leadership group inside the dressing room this season.

Even if you don’t wear the armband, you can still have a major responsibility to lead in matches. Let’s not forget that legendary Blues captain John Terry had the likes of Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Michael Ballack backing him up as senior figures.

Enzo Maresca tipped Levi Colwill as a future Chelsea captain

Back in January 2025, Enzo Maresca highlighted Levi Colwill’s leadership by insisting that he could be a future Chelsea captian.

The Blues head coach said: “Levi, even if he is not wearing the armband, he is one of the captains and in the future, he could be a captain of this club.”

If Colwill’s got ambitions of one day wearing the armband, he’ll love hearing the manager’s comments.

The reality is that Colwill’s immediate focus needs to be ensuring he’s a long-term starter in Chelsea’s best XI. He’s been a key player for the Blues during the 2024/25 season, but we feel his levels have dipped slightly and he’s got loads of room for improvement.

It should light a fire in Colwill’s stomach that Chelsea could ‘go big’ on signing a new defender because the competition for places may be ramped up.
