In what has been a rare moment during the 2024/25 season, Chelsea had their goalkeeper to thank for helping them get over the line and beat Everton in their most recent Premier League game.

Robert Sanchez made a few big saves in the second half to keep out the Toffees, with Jordan Pickford praising Sanchez for his performance at Stamford Bridge.

However, this campaign as a whole has seen Blues fans largely underwhelmed by whoever has been between the sticks, with Filip Jorgensen also not impressing whenever given the opportunity since his summer move.

This has seen Chelsea reportedly keen on signing a new goalkeeper, with them doing plenty of work behind the scenes to gain information on a number of potential targets.

Gregor Kobel can see himself playing for Chelsea after ‘very close’ discussions

One of the top names who continues to crop up in reports is Gregor Kobel, the current number one at Borussia Dortmund.

The Blues reportedly believe Kobel is better suited than Sanchez to Enzo Maresca’s system, with playing out from the back a big part of what they are trying to do at Stamford Bridge.

While they have only been monitoring the goalkeeper up to now, the latest report from BILD has stated that there have now been ‘very close’ discussions between the player and Chelsea.

The report goes on to say that he is coming around to the idea of moving to London should a deal be agreed between both sides this summer.

Enzo Maresca’s stance on a new goalkeeper

Maresca has been keen to defend his goalkeepers in the media this season as they have continued to come in for criticism as a result of their performances.

However, behind the scenes the opinion has not been the same. Maresca wants a new goalkeeper at Chelsea, with a priority being placed on footwork and their ability on the ball.

This was reportedly behind the decision to send Djordje Petrovic on loan, and despite him being an extremely solid goalkeeper at Strasbourg, there is no clarity over whether he will be brought back into the fold at Stamford Bridge as a result.
