Nigerian midfielder, Israel Ayuma has spoken about his recent experience with the Flying Eagles at the U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Speaking on Brila FM’s ‘No Holds Barred with Ifeanyi Udeze’, Ayuma said, “It was a good experience for me. I learnt some things during this tournament. I arrived at the U20 camp just two weeks before it started.”
Ayuma showed his ability to adapt when coach Aliyu Zubairu asked him to play in a different role.
“As a player, you need to be versatile. I have a good relationship with the coach. He called me before the game and told me I would play as a defensive midfielder. He asked if I could do it, and I said yes.”
About his fitness concern after returning from a long term injury, the NK Istra star said, “After every game, the coach and I talk. He and his staff even praise me, even when I feel I didn’t play well. I know I’m still recovering, so I need to keep working hard.”
Ayuma helped Nigeria finish third at the AFCON, earning his second medal for the national team after winning the WAFU B U20 Championship in 2024.
When asked about being compared to former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi, Ayuma stayed humble.

“I don’t need to be compared to anyone. I still have a long way to go. It’s a big opportunity to play for the national team and share the pitch with top players like Victor Osimhen. I just want to work hard and show I deserve to be here.”
“Even though we’re on break, I came to Lagos to keep training. I can’t just relax. I have many goals ahead, so I’ll keep working to make the squad for the World Cup,” he added.
