Chelsea winger Pedro Neto earned his 16th senior international cap for Portugal this week, which came in an impressive win against Germany.

Pedro Neto started as Portugal came from behind to win 2-1 against Germany in the Nations League semi-final.

The 25-year-old attacker was extremely busy last season for Chelsea, making 45 appearances across all competitions. He’s following that up with a hectic summer as well, which includes the Nations League semi-final and final, plus the Club World Cup tournament with the Blues.

Portuguese media were impressed by Neto after the Chelsea star’s contribution against Germany. Even though he didn’t score or assist, the versatile forward caught the eye with his pace and directness on the left wing.

Chelsea fans enjoyed Pedro Neto on the left wing against Germany

Chelsea supporters on social media made the same point that Neto impressed in his role as the left-winger in Portugal’s victory against Germany.

One fan wrote: “Neto is so much better on the left. His dribbling is better and he crosses with both feet.”

“Neto is balling on the left side,” another posted.

One supporter claimed: “Neto is so much better on the left than on the right.”

“The entirety of their chances have come from Neto bursting down the left flank on Germany turnovers,” another said.

Neto proved last year during his first season with Chelsea that he can play anywhere across the forward line, splitting the minutes across both wings and even the central striker position. The most important thing is that Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca said Neto’s best on the right wing, but the flexibility makes him such a useful option in the squad.

With Jadon Sancho’s Chelsea exit confirmed, it does mean the Blues look a little light on the left wing right now going into next season.

Neto and Noni Madueke, who are both left-footed, can operate on the left flank. However, Chelsea want a new right-footed left-winger to sign for them this summer.

Why 2024/25 season was hugely significant for Pedro Neto

Not only was last season Neto’s first year at Chelsea since a huge £54m transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers, but it was also the first time in a while he’s stayed clear of any serious injuries.

Season Club Appearances (All competitions) Goals Assists Minutes played
2024/25 Chelsea 45 6 9 2,852
2023/24 Wolves 24 3 14 1,729

If he can stay fit, Neto should kick on during his second year with the Blues.

The skilful 25-year-old wide man possesses the individual quality to embarrass full-backs, but it’s just about unlocking his true potential on a consistent basis.
