Chelsea would be prepared to break their wage structure on one condition in the transfer market.
The Blues have been major spenders in the 21st century, both on transfers and wages. However, the current Chelsea owners have tried to make changes at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have worked to reduce their wage bill over time, which is especially important because of the Premier League’s Profitability & Sustainability Rules.
Fresh reports claim that one thing could make them perform a U-turn, though.
Chelsea would break wage structure under the right circumstances
Journalist Kieran Gill has reported via The Daily Mail that Chelsea are looking at transfer targets that fit within their existing wage structure.
However, he adds that the Blues hierarchy are not strict in saying it cannot be broken for a big name. If the right opportunity presented itself, the club’s officials would be willing to break the wage structure.
If you look at the player salaries in Chelsea’s squad, club captain Reece James is the top earner at £250,000-a-week. He’s followed by Wesley Fofana (£200,000-a-week) and Enzo Fernandez (£180,000-a-week).
When it comes to the significant decisions at Stamford Bridge, co-owners Todd Boehly, Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano must give their approval. Chelsea’s senior trio sign off on big calls, including transfer-related activity.
It’s a real statement of intent from Boehly, along with the rest of the Blues officials, that they could dig deep into their pockets to sign a marquee player if they deem it necessary.
Alexander Isak is the type of signing Chelsea should break their structure for
If Chelsea break their wage structure further down the line, it should be on a prolific goalscorer who can elevate the team to another level.
For example, we think Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, 25, would be worth splashing the cash for.
Competition | Appearances | Goals |
Premier League | 32 | 23 |
Carabao Cup | 6 | 3 |
FA Cup | 2 | 1 |
Chelsea are interested in Alexander Isak, along with several other top clubs, but there’s no indication on what kind of wages he would demand.
At the moment, Isak is on a £120,000-a-week deal (Salary Sport) at St James’ Park. However, GiveMeSport claims Newcastle could break their own wage structure to keep Isak by paying him more than £200,000-a-week.
It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Isak stay at Newcastle after winning silverware with them this season via the Carabao Cup, but Chelsea must seriously throw their name into the hat if a move is on the cards.
