Former Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele has just paid one Blues player a very high compliment.
It comes after Chelsea‘s terrific performance against Liverpool last weekend, with Enzo Maresca‘s men managing to beat their opponents 3-1.
As a result, Chelsea have been able to remain in fifth place and give their chances of securing Champions League football for next season a massive boost.
Enzo Fernandez and Cole Palmer were the two Chelsea players to score for the team on the day. Palmer has since been praised by Jermaine Jenas and others for both his performance and post-match interview.
Claude Makelele compares Cole Palmer to Arjen Robben
Makelele knows what a good attacker looks like after playing with Arjen Robben, and the Frenchman has now compared Palmer to his ex-teammate.
Speaking about Palmer on talkSPORT, Makelele said: “He reminds me of Robben. He changed the game every single 10 minutes. He’s unbelievable. He has this quality.”
Like Robben, Palmer has undoubtedly carried a threat for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. This season, the Englishman has scored 15 goals and provided nine assists in 42 appearances.
Last term, he came up with an impressive 25 goals and 15 assists in 48 outings. There has clearly been a dip, but Palmer still remains Chelsea’s most dangerous player and one of the best footballers in the Premier League.
For Gary Neville, Palmer was superb against Liverpool. If he can replicate that in the Blues’ final three league games, then Champions League nights could be returning to the Bridge.
Cole Palmer and Arjen Robben’s best goalscoring seasons at Chelsea compared
Robben did not become an output machine until he joined Bayern Munich in 2009. For as good as the Dutchman was at Chelsea, he had not yet to developed into a goalscorer, while injuries saw him miss a lot of games.
His best goalscoring season at Chelsea pales in comparison to Palmer’s. But Palmer still has a very long way to go before he reaches the heights of Robben’s overall career.
Player | Season | Appearances | Goals |
Cole Palmer | 2023/24 | 45 | 25 |
Arjen Robben | 2004/05 | 29 | 9 |
Whatever the case, to be compared to such a talented and successful footballer like Robben bodes well for the England international.
