Enzo Fernandez emerged as a key player during Enzo Maresca’s first year as Chelsea head coach, and what he’s just said should delight his manager.
It’s quite obvious that Enzo Fernandez, 24, is a key individual within the Chelsea squad.
The box-to-box central midfielder is usually one of the first names on the team sheet. On top of that, he regularly wears the captain’s armband when teammate Reece James isn’t on the pitch.
Chelsea don’t plan to entertain talks about selling Fernandez because they view him as part of an elite midfield that stacks up against any other in Europe.
Including the Club World Cup, Fernandez has nine goals and 14 assists in 47 Chelsea appearances across all competitions in the 2024/25 season. He scored in the Blues’ 2-0 win against Los Angeles FC in their opening group stage match of the Club World Cup.
Enzo Fernandez desperate to score and assist more next season
In a recent interview, Chelsea midfielder Fernandez has clearly stated that he’s pushing for more goal contributions next season.
Fernandez said via Chelsea’s official website: “My goal against LAFC was my eighth of the season. That is a good number; it’s good in one season and I am thankful to God for this. But for me, this is still just the beginning. I’m always going to want more, I always want to do better.
“And if I can do that, I will be helping the team. This is always on my mind. It’s why I work hard and try to improve, and with Enzo [Maresca], I am playing further forward, which has helped with my statistics. Next season, though, I want to score more goals and give more assists.”
Season | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
2022/23 (Joined in January) | 22 | 0 | 2 |
2023/24 | 40 | 7 | 4 |
2024/25 | 47 | 9 | 14 |
As you can see above, Fernandez has become a much bigger goal threat in the last year.
Tim Sherwood thinks Chelsea must build around Fernandez, someone who can do a bit of everything on the football pitch.
Enzo Maresca insisted Enzo Fernandez contributes more in front of goal
Speaking in May, Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca demanded that Fernandez develop into a midfielder who scores and assists more.
Maresca said via Chelsea’s official website: “With Enzo [Fernandez], we are trying with him since day one to get more goals and assists. In terms of numbers, he’s improved a lot, but I think he can do better. The way we play, he is a player that can score 10 to 15 goals a season.”
It’s why Fernandez’s latest comments should be music to the ears of Maresca because he’s agreed with him. The big winners could be Chelsea fans because they know all about the excitement that a genuine goalscoring midfielder can bring.
Fernandez has worked on crashing the box more to help score more goals, and in 2025 we’re really starting to see the rewards of his effort.
