Liam Delap appears to be on the verge of making a high-profile switch to Chelsea this summer.
Even though Liam Delap, 22, suffered relegation from the Premier League with Ipswich Town this season, he’s come out of it with an enhanced reputation for his individual performances. As a result, widespread transfer speculation points towards the English centre-forward joining Chelsea.
It’s been claimed that Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign Delap, and the young striker is expected to complete a £30m move to West London.
Apparently, Chelsea’s transfer focus shifts towards a new left-winger after wrapping up the Delap deal.
Graeme Souness rates Liam Delap to Chelsea transfer
According to Graeme Souness, Chelsea and Delap feel like a good fit for each other.
He predicts that the 22-year-old forward can make the step up next season at a bigger club.
Souness told The Daily Mail: “Liam Delap will be a good acquisition. He has scored goals in an Ipswich Town side that has been scrapping throughout the season, and I believe he can make that jump to play at the top level with a big club, but he does have to become more clinical in his finishing.
“I think he has been educated in the correct way, and having experience on loan in the Championship was a strong part of his development. He will appreciate the opportunity he has to make a name for himself.”
It was a decent year for Delap at Ipswich during his first full season of Premier League football, scoring 12 goals in 37 top-flight matches. In a much stronger Chelsea outfit, we hope he can boost that attacking output.
Interestingly, Ipswich would like Chelsea’s Marc Guiu on loan to help fire them straight back up from the Championship next season. If we were advising the 19-year-old Blues striker, we’d tell him a year playing regularly at Portman Road could be fantastic for his development.
Liam Delap medical is now scheduled
As fans patiently wait for confirmation that Delap to Chelsea is a done deal, they will be glad to hear that a medical is scheduled for the start of next week.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano reports via X that the England Under-21 international will undergo a Chelsea medical on Monday.
Chelsea are targeting four key signings to revamp the squad this summer, so it’s great to see they are acting quickly to get the first new face through the door.
We’re hopeful that Delap will settle quickly with the Blues as he joins a group full of talented youngsters like himself. The fact that he knows Enzo Maresca, Cole Palmer and Romeo Lavia from his time in the Manchester City academy should help, too.
