Getafe manager, José Bordalás has praised midfielder Christantus Uche for his impressive transition to top-flight football in Spain, just a year after making the leap from third-tier side Ceuta.

Uche has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign at Getafe, defying expectations that often come with such a dramatic step up.

While players promoted from lower leagues frequently struggle for playing time, the 22-year-old has become a key figure in Bordalás’ squad.

In 32 La Liga appearances this season, Uche has contributed four goals and five assists.

He has made a total of 37 appearances across all competitions, adding one more assist in the cup and becoming one of the most fouled players in the league behind only Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior and Real Sociedad’s Takefusa Kubo.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference ahead of Getafe’s season finale against Celta Vigo, Bordalás singled out Uche for special praise.

“He’s a fabulous kid, a boy who has a huge commitment. We have great affection for him,” said the Getafe boss, via Marca.

“All players go through a process. He reached professional football without going through all the traditional stages.

“Perhaps it was difficult for him at times, but we tried to help him. We’re very grateful. He’s been very important just like his teammates.

“I have a special affection for him. He was a risky bet, and we’re very happy. We think he has room for improvement; he’s very young.”

Uche’s impressive performances at club level have finally earned him a look-in from the national team.

After being left out of the final squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe despite making the provisional list he has now received his first senior call-up.

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has included Uche in the squad for the upcoming Unity Cup in London as well as the friendly against Russia on June 6.

With his confidence soaring, Uche’s next challenge will be to build on this momentum and solidify his place for both club and country.
