Jadon Sancho was part of a historic Chelsea side that secured a comeback win against Real Betis in the Conference League final.
Chelsea made history on Wednesday night when they beat Spanish club Betis 4-1 in Wroclaw, Poland. After winning the Conference League, they are now the first club to complete a clean sweep of every European trophy.
Despite the fact they were trailing at half time, the Blues responded in the second period with goals from Enzo Fernandez, Nicolas Jackson, Jadon Sancho and Moises Caicedo to clinch the silverware.
Even though he didn’t start the cup final, Sancho made a gigantic impact off the bench against Betis. The left-winger scored his team’s third goal with a stunning finish that he curled into the top corner.
Now, everyone is keen to find out whether the Englishman will still be playing at Stamford Bridge next season.
Sancho, 25, joined the Blues last summer from Manchester United on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy for £25m. However, Chelsea can opt out of buying Sancho if they decide to pay a £5m penalty fee.
Joe Cole wants Jadon Sancho back at Chelsea next season
Joe Cole, the former Blues star, has admitted he would like to see Chelsea re-sign Sancho this summer.
When asked if the 25-year-old attacker has done enough to stay at Chelsea, Cole told TNT Sports 1 (10:50pm, 28 May): “Yes, I do. This is a kid that has gone to Dortmund and was a star. He was a superstar as a kid. He went to Manchester United and wasn’t one. He’s done it. He’s come here and got his career back on track. I still think there is more to come from him; I really do.”
It could now be an anxious wait for supporters and the player himself to see what happens next this summer.
Apparently, Chelsea haven’t communicated with Sancho anything about his future, so there is a chance that the Conference League final was his final appearance for the club. If so, he’ll leave with an incredible parting gift because of his eye-catching cameo display against Betis.
Insiders think Chelsea are leaning towards signing Sancho and securing him on a permanent basis.
Sancho has been happy at Chelsea and doesn’t want a return to Old Trafford this summer. The talented winger has surely done his chances of staying put no harm with his contribution in a European final.
Jadon Sancho lights up final against Real Betis
Chelsea kicked into a gear in the second half against Betis that the La Liga side couldn’t handle.
Without a doubt, the introduction of players like Sancho and Reece James from the bench massively helped swing the tide of the contest.
Here is a look at the individual statistics from Sancho’s eye-catching display.
Minutes played | Goals | Assists | Accurate passes | Chances created | Touches in opposition box | Shots on target | Match rating |
29 | 1 | 0 | 17/17 (100%) | 1 | 4 | 1/1 (100%) | 7.5 |
Sancho tormented the Betis defence for half an hour, providing a major threat on the left wing. Chelsea fans have seen over the course of the season that he’s capable of brilliance on the football pitch, but he’s sometimes guilty of lacking a bit of consistency.
Sancho finishes the campaign with five goals and 10 assists in 42 appearances across all competitions for the Blues. At £25m, it does feel like his transfer signing would make sense.
