Super Eagles striker, Cyriel Dessers has described his Scottish Premiership Golden Boot triumph as “a wee reward for never giving up” following what he admitted was a turbulent season at Rangers.
The Nigeria international finished as the top scorer in the 2024/25 league campaign with 18 goals in 35 appearances, edging out Celtic’s Daizen Maeda and Dundee’s Simon Murray, who both ended the season with 16 goals.
Despite the personal milestone, Dessers acknowledged that the recognition comes with mixed emotions, as Rangers fell short of winning the league title.
“Scottish Premiership Top Scorer 2024-25. Not the big trophy we all wanted, but a wee reward for never giving up.” the 30-year-old posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Dessers’ time at Ibrox has been anything but smooth. Since his arrival two seasons ago, the forward has faced his fair share of criticism, particularly over his finishing.
Though known for his work ethic and physical presence, his 22% conversion rate drew scrutiny from pundits and fans alike.
At several points during the campaign, Dessers found himself benched. But under interim manager Barry Ferguson, the Nigerian regained his place in the starting lineup during the crucial title run-in and repaid the faith with goals.
His Golden Boot award marks the third major top-scorer honour of his career, having previously won similar accolades in the Eredivisie and the UEFA Conference League.
As Rangers brace for an offseason of change with new ownership and a managerial overhaul expected, there’s speculation about Dessers’ future at the club.
Some reports suggest the club may be open to parting ways with the striker, despite his strong finish to the season.
Wherever he ends up, Dessers has at least carved out a small but meaningful legacy in Glasgow.
He may not have always been the most clinical in front of goal, but his determination and resilience have earned him respect and a Golden Boot to show for it.
