Olakunle Olusegun has earned his long awaited first call up to the Super Eagles ahead of their upcoming international friendly against Russia, following a late invitation from head coach Éric Chelle.
This selection represents a milestone moment for the 23 year old, who recently voiced his frustration over being consistently overlooked for national team duty, despite impressive performances in the Russian Premier League.
Olusegun played a role in FC Krasnodar’s successful 2024/25 title campaign, scoring two goals across 580 minutes of league action.
His comments appeared to resonate with fans and possibly influenced the national team selectors, as Chelle included him in the squad just days before the friendly in Moscow.
Olusegun previously featured for Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets during the 2019 Africa U 17 Cup of Nations and the 2019 FIFA U 17 World Cup, tallying nine appearances at youth level.
His addition brings the number of players in camp to 19.
The Super Eagles are currently dealing with several player withdrawals, including Bayer Leverkusen forward Nathan Tella, who is sidelined due to passport renewal issues.
The friendly set for June 6 at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium will serve as an important preparatory match for Chelle’s squad ahead of the remaining FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
