Chelsea have wrapped up their 2024/25 season in style by lifting silverware in the Conference League.
On Wednesday night, the Blues came from behind to secure an impressive 4-1 victory against Real Betis in the Conference League final.
In fairness, Spanish outfit Betis were the better team in the first half, scoring through Abde Ezzalzouli to take the lead.
However, Chelsea responded with four goals in a dominant second half to clinch the trophy. Enzo Fernandez, Nicolas Jackson, Jadon Sancho and Moises Caicedo were all on the scoresheet for the English club.
Apparently, Jackson wanted to repay Chelsea after his red card earlier in May in the Premier League. The striker certainly did that by returning to the starting line-up and scoring.
Spanish publication El Mira ran a live blog of the Conference League final, and it’s no surprise that Chelsea’s Cole Palmer got a special mention.
Even though the 23-year-old attacking midfielder didn’t score, he assisted the first two Blues goals to complete the comeback. First, he delivered an accurate cross for Fernandez’s header. He then showed incredible feet to trick his way in the penalty box and set up Jackson’s goal.
El Mira said after Fernandez’s goal: “Enzo Fernandez scored with a header after a flawless cross from Cole Palmer.”
They added after Jackson’s goal: “A spectacular individual move by Cole Palmer, and Nicolas Jackson makes no mistake with his chest just a few meters from the goal.”
It’s been reported that Palmer is deemed as ‘unsellable’ at Chelsea. When you see what he can do on a football pitch, it’s no surprise he’s so highly regarded by the club.
The England international has had a bit of criticism for a dip in form during the second half of the season, but he’s just stepped up in a European final when his team needed a hero.
Jermaine Jenas’ prediction on Palmer is that he can grow into one of the best players on the planet. For certain, delivering in big finals and huge moments is the way to earn that reputation.
Scott Minto reacts to Cole Palmer display
Scott Minto, the former Blues defender, joined in with the praise of Chelsea talisman Palmer.
After Palmer’s assist for Fernandez’s goal, Minto told talkSPORT: “It’s brilliant! Everyone would love to play with Cole Palmer, he comes in and it’s a wonderful ball to the far post. Inch perfect!”
Minto added after his second assist: “He’s done it again! When you need something to happen, you look towards your best players and that’s what Cole Palmer has done.”
It means that Palmer finishes his second campaign in Chelsea colours with 15 goals and 12 assists across all competitions, highlighting his importance in the XI. We actually think he will be disappointed with that tally and ready to push for more next year, though.
