Former Super Eagles defender, Abbey George has advised Victor Osimhen to focus on sporting ambition rather than financial rewards, amid speculation linking the striker with a move to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal.

“It depends on what motivates him,” George said. “If it’s money, then Al Hilal makes sense. But if he wants to win trophies, compete at the highest level, and feature in the world’s top competitions, then he should remain in Europe.

“He’ll still earn a lot there. A move to Saudi Arabia could also affect his performance with the national team.”

Osimhen, 26, has solidified his reputation as one of the top forwards in world football at the moment, playing a key role in Galatasaray’s 2024/25 domestic double—winning both the Super Lig and Turkish Cup.

Despite attracting interest from several top European clubs, including Chelsea, his future remains uncertain.

“Osimhen is still in his prime,” George continued. “Why not stay in Europe, play in the Champions League for a few more years, and then consider a move for the big paycheck in Saudi Arabia?”

Addressing the persistent links to Chelsea, a club Osimhen supported as a child, George said “Financial Fair Play, transfer fees, agent commissions, and other costs all come into play. To make the deal possible, Chelsea may need to sell some players in order to comply with financial regulations.”

Beyond the financial aspects, George also pointed to character as a key consideration in transfers.

“Chelsea’s coach wants players he can shape. If Osimhen is perceived as having a big ego, that could be a problem regardless of his talent.”

Osimhen, under contract with Napoli until 2026, remains one of the most sought after names in the summer transfer market.
