Chelsea have been linked with several different attacking options in the summer transfer window so far, including Brighton’s Joao Pedro.
The Blues did manage to recruit English striker Liam Delap from Ipswich Town earlier this month, but they continue to be linked with several different attackers.
In particular, Joao Pedro is tipped with a potential move to Stamford Bridge this summer.
It’s been claimed that Chelsea are preparing an offer for Brighton attacker Pedro, but that Premier League rivals Newcastle United are also lining up a bid.
Joao Pedro expected to join Newcastle over Chelsea
Journalist Simon Phillips reports via Substack that Brighton’s Pedro is attracting interest from Chelsea, but nothing has advanced yet after contacting the player’s agent at the start of June.
Apparently, Newcastle are the suitor who is more advanced in the race to sign the 23-year-old Brazilian attacker. In fact, they are ‘expected’ to be the club that get a transfer deal over the line.
Even though Chelsea are considering a move, it sounds like Newcastle are in pole position to bring the Brighton frontman to St James’ Park.
Chelsea think Pedro could be a perfect signing for them, especially because the South American star can cover multiple attacking positions with his versatility.
Pedro would be keen on Chelsea discussions if a deal is agreed with Brighton. The two Premier League clubs are certainly very familiar with each other because the Blues signed the likes of Marc Cucurella, Moises Caicedo and Robert Sanchez from them in recent years.
Joao Pedro has gone under the radar at Brighton
Since Pedro joined Brighton from Watford two years ago, he’s been a success story at the Amex Stadium.
Season | Appearnaces | Goals | Assists |
2023/24 | 40 | 20 | 3 |
2024/25 | 30 | 10 | 7 |
It’s unclear whether he’s ready to step up and shine at a Champions League club, but it makes sense that he’s receiving plenty of transfer interest. Incidentally, he’s still under contract with Brighton until 2028.
He fits the profile for Chelsea as a talented youngster with plenty of room to develop, but we suspect it may be easier for him to get game time in Newcastle colours if he joins them.
