The reliable Fabrizio Romano has given a very interesting update on Moises Caicedo’s contract situation at Chelsea.

Caicedo still has six years remaining on his existing deal, with it not set to expire until the summer of 2031.

However, it emerged towards the end of last season that Chelsea want to hand Caicedo a new contract.

Romano has now explained why in the latest episode of his podcast, where the Italian journalist discussed all things Chelsea.

Chelsea fear other clubs are taking note of Moises Caicedo

Caicedo had a terrific 2024/25 campaign, winning the Chelsea Players’ Player of the Season award ahead of the likes of Cole Palmer and Marc Cucurella.

Caicedo voted for Nicolas Jackson, but the midfielder was a deserved winner after putting in some excellent performances, performances that have not gone unnoticed.

According to Romano, Chelsea believe some of Europe’s top teams now have an interest in Caicedo after his stunning season. Because of that and how much the Blues themselves appreciate the 23-year-old, they want to discuss a new contract with him.

Speaking on The Here We Go Podcast, Romano said: “My understanding is that Chelsea, internally, are preparing a new contract proposal to be discussed.

“[They’re] not in a rush because the contract is still very long, but [it’s] to be discussed [in the] next months with Moises Caicedo because they love the player. They have a feeling that many top clubs around Europe are really appreciating him.”

Caicedo has also impressed on the international stage. Even Brazil fans were waxing lyrical about Caicedo after their nation’s 0-0 draw with Ecuador last week.

John Obi Mikel makes bold Moises Caicedo claim

Former Chelsea star John Obi Mikel has also discussed Caicedo recently. He thinks the ex-Brighton & Hove Albion player was amazing last term.

At the same time, though, the Chelsea legend has claimed that he would still get into Enzo Maresca‘s team over him.

When Mikel discussed Chelsea’s midfield options, he said: “Peak Mikel in 2012 or 2013 would still get into this Chelsea midfield, despite the obvious quality they have. I’d pick myself over those guys. But all the midfielders’ performances have been fantastic.”

Caicedo is Chelsea’s present and future now, however, and hopefully the Blues can keep hold of him. Interest in the Ecuador international is hardly a surprise after the season he has had, but whether he signs a new contract or not, Chelsea are under no pressure to sell because of the length of his existing deal.
