Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens could be a very exciting signing for Chelsea this summer as the club close in on the 20-year-old.
Chelsea are hoping to bring in Gittens, who is a skilful and talented wide man. In 48 appearances last season, the England Under-21 international scored 12 goals and provided three assists.
His potential arrival at Stamford Bridge could be good news for a few individuals. For others, though, they may not benefit from it.
With that in mind, The Chelsea Chronicle has taken a look at three winners and two losers from the Blues’ move for Gittens.
Liam Delap (winner)
Chelsea recently confirmed the signing of Liam Delap from Ipswich Town, and the striker would welcome the arrival of Gittens.
Before his move to Ipswich last summer, Delap was at Manchester City. There, he got to play alongside Gittens at Under-18 level.
In one academy match, City hammered Liverpool 5-2, with Delap setting up Gittens on the day. Familiar with each other’s game, the former could really benefit from the latter joining Enzo Maresca‘s side.
Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley (winners)
Chelsea’s co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley deserve a bit of credit if they manage to get Gittens through the door.
Last year, it was reported that Dortmund wanted £83m for Gittens. However, it now looks like Chelsea could sign their former academy player for around half of that. Still 20 and possessing a lot of potential, Stewart and Winstanley could be about to land a real bargain.
Noni Madueke (loser)
In terms of losers, Noni Madueke could end up being one after spending some time on the left flank last season.
Gittens is likely to start there, meaning that Madueke could drop out of the side. On the right, he has to compete with Pedro Neto and Estevao Willian, so you would have to fear for the 23-year-old. Napoli are interested in Madueke, so they could offer him a way out of Stamford Bridge this summer.
Tyrique George (loser)
If Chelsea and Maresca really wanted to, they could make Tyrique George and Madueke the two main options for the left wing and then Neto and Estevao for the opposite flank.
Signing Gittens and having someone else — perhaps even Madueke — back him up seems the more likely scenario, though. It means George’s game time could be limited next term. All in all, Gittens’ arrival will be good for some, others not so much.
