Chelsea were keen to get rid of Trevoh Chalobah last summer but could only find a loan move for him.

Chalobah was frozen out of Enzo Maresca‘s squad before eventually joining FA Cup winners Crystal Palace on loan.

After an injury crisis at the back, Chelsea recalled the defender in January, and he has impressed since returning to the club. Chalobah recently won his first England call-up, showing just how good he has been in the second half of the season.

Thomas Tuchel is clearly pleased with the 25-year-old’s form, but he is not the only one.

Chelsea impressed with Trevoh Chalobah’s performances and conduct

Last month, Joe Cole slammed Chelsea for letting Chalobah leave, and some at the club may now also feel that allowing him to join Palace was a mistake.

They are starting to see Chalobah’s quality, with Sky Sports reporting that the Blues have been impressed with both his performances and conduct this season.

Whether the central defender has done enough to keep his spot in Maresca’s squad, though, remains to be seen.

Chelsea are expected to bring in a new centre-half when the transfer window opens next month, which could push Chalobah down the pecking order.

They have missed out on Dean Huijsen, who has opted to join Real Madrid instead, but Chalobah’s former teammate at Palace Marc Guehi is still available.

Palace are resigned to losing Guehi as Chelsea and other clubs in the Premier League target the 24-year-old.

Chelsea should keep hold of Trevoh Chalobah

Telegraph journalist Matt Law expects Chelsea to sell Chalobah, but the former Palace loanee has proven that he is good enough to be part of Maresca’s group.

Chalobah is a modern-day centre-half, comfortable in possession. However, at the same time, he is also quite an old-fashioned defender who is not afraid to clear his lines.

His average of 3.6 clearances per Premier League game this season is the second highest in Chelsea’s squad.

Average per game
Clearances 3.6
Passes 51.1
Pass success rate 90.5%

All in all, Chelsea should be looking to retain Chalobah’s services. He has rarely disappointed in a blue shirt.
