Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has stated that the invitational tournament will serve as a vital platform for his coaching crew to experiment with new players and tactical systems.

Nigeria is one of four national teams participating in the tournament, set to take place at the Gtech Community Stadium, home of Premier League club Brentford.

The other teams are Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago.

The Unity Cup kicks off on Tuesday, May 27, with Jamaica facing Trinidad & Tobago in the first semi-final.

A day later, Nigeria will rekindle their storied rivalry with the Black Stars of Ghana in the second semi-final on Wednesday, May 28.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Chelle stressed the importance of using the Unity Cup to broaden the national team’s player pool and test tactical flexibility.

“We have lots of players in Nigeria so we need to give a chance to lots of players who can show us their quality,” the Malian coach said.

“We are focused, we have a project, and we want to create an identity so we need to put players who can learn quickly on this project.”

Chelle emphasized that the tournament provides an ideal setting to assess new systems and prepare for Nigeria’s competitive fixtures later in the year.

“Unity Cup is a project to try some players, try some other systems and be ready in September.

“I was in Nigeria and watched two league games and I spent time analysing some players and I think there are some quality players who deserve a chance because I believe they can bring lots of intensity and aggression.”

The coach also touched on his selection of ten home-based players and the inclusion of veteran forward Ahmed Musa, who currently plays for NPFL side Kano Pillars.

“I I picked 10 players from the NPFL and I can tell you they are good players. Ahmed Musa is a great player which every Nigerian know, this is the reality and it is the fact.

“His quality and experience are valuable. He knows the game and has played many high-level matches, so he can add something to the group.

“My vision is simple, we give him a chance. He must take it and show what he can do. After that, it’s my decision.”

The Super Eagles currently have 22 players in camp as they continue preparations in London. Four more players are expected to join before the tournament kicks off.
