Chelsea managed to complete their main objectives this season, but some of their players have still disappointed.
Enzo Maresca‘s side were able to win the Conference League and qualify for the Champions League.
Nicolas Jackson put Chelsea 2-1 up against Real Betis in the Conference League final but has had a very inconsistent year. The striker only scored 10 goals during the 2024/25 Premier League campaign.
Another forward, Christopher Nkunku, has also had his struggles. Nkunku was snubbed for Chelsea’s European final and seems to be edging closer to the exit door.
Christopher Nkunku has surprised Tony Cascarino
Much was expected of Nkunku when he joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig in 2023. In his final season at the Red Bull Arena, he scored 23 goals. In his penultimate one, the Frenchman managed to register 35.
Much to the disappointment of former Blue Tony Cascarino, though, Nkunku has not come anywhere close to reaching those heights at Stamford Bridge.
Discussing him on talkSPORT, Cascarino said: “Nkunku has been a real surprise to me. He’s just never got going at Chelsea at all. Done really well in Germany but still hasn’t got going here.”
Nkunku has not been able to get into the team as a striker or attacking midfielder this season. It would now be a major surprise if he remained in west London.
Juventus are interested in Nkunku, so the Allianz Stadium is one potential destination for the 27-year-old.
Christopher Nkunku’s number of goals at Chelsea
This season, Nkunku has managed to score 14 goals, which is not a terrible number, especially given his lack of starting opportunities.
However, half of those goals have come in the Conference League and Conference League qualifiers.
Since Nkunku has been at Chelsea, the France international has netted 17 times in total, which is quite disappointing when you consider what he was able to accomplish at Leipzig.
Christopher Nkunku’s Chelsea stats | Appearances | Goals |
2024/25 | 42 | 14 |
2023/24 | 14 | 3 |
Total | 56 | 17 |
Nkunku will argue, though, that if he is not starting games, then how much of an impact he can make is limited. And the former Paris Saint-Germain man has obviously had injuries, contributing to his lack of starts.
At this stage, a fresh start for Nkunku would probably be best for everyone, and he is likely to get that this summer.
