Chelsea will likely be a bit disappointed they were not able to add to the early signing of Liam Delap before the summer transfer window temporarily closed.

The Blues walked away from signing Mike Maignan on deadline day after feeling as if they were being asked to pay too much for a player whose contract was set to expire in 12 months’ time.

Chelsea were keen to bring some top players into Enzo Maresca’s squad ahead of next week’s Club World Cup group stages. The Blues take on LAFC on Monday to open their tournament.

Another player they were keen on signing early this summer was Jamie Gittens, with the winger keen on moving away from Borussia Dortmund this season.

Chelsea made a late bid to sign Gittens on deadline day, however eventually were forced to walk away for now due to not meeting the Bundesliga side’s demands.

Now though, Fabrizio Romano has claimed that a bid could be on the table again in the next few days to try and reach an agreement.

He said to GiveMeSport: “The player is literally waiting for Chelsea’s call as he has also told Dortmund directors. Gittens wants Chelsea; he will remain professional in the next weeks, but his desire is to sign for the Blues and that won’t change anytime soon.

“The agreement between Bynoe-Gittens, his agents and Chelsea is done until June 2032 on a seven-year contract; and he won’t change his word and plans as he wants Chelsea as his next destination.

“Sources confirm that Chelsea are prepared to return in negotiations with Borussia Dortmund soon to re-discuss terms and try to reach an agreement – their plans include Bynoe-Gittens and a new proposal could be on the table already in the next days.”

The report goes on to say that Dortmund were asking for £60m in order to part ways with the player before the Club World Cup.

Jamie Gittens not Chelsea’s only attacking target

Despite doing a lot of groundwork regarding the signing of Gittens, he is not the only left winger the club are fans of ahead of the rest of the window.

The Blues are long-term admirers of Alejandro Garnacho, with Maresca in particular keen on the Manchester United man back in January.

Nico Williams is also on the list at Stamford Bridge, however they will need to get his salary demands down if they are to bring him in.

Gittens is still very much the priority, and Dortmund are expected to sell, however the clubs will need to reach an agreement that suits both parties to facilitate the deal.
