After the transfer window temporarily slammed shut before the Club World Cup, it has given Chelsea an opportunity to reassess their targets.
The Blues were unable to add to the signing of Liam Delap, despite holding interest in Jamie Gittens and Mike Maignan on deadline day.
A new attacker and goalkeeper look as if they are at the top of the list for Chelsea, who need to back Enzo Maresca in the transfer window after he delivered on his targets in his first campaign at the club.
A number of centre-backs have also been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, however they were beaten to the first major target in the form of Dean Huijsen by Real Madrid.
Chelsea make Tomas Araujo their priority signing this summer
One name who has continued to be mentioned in reports is Tomas Araujo, who has just enjoyed his breakout campaign as a top defender for Benfica.
Chelsea have already made contact with Araujo over a potential move, and have fallen short with bids for his services in the past.
However, they could be about to return with a more serious offer. According to A Bola, the centre-back is top of Chelsea’s list for a new signing this summer.
Tomas Araujo amongst the most promising defenders in Europe
Despite being just 23, Araujo has established himself as a regular of one of the bigger clubs in Europe. He will not be joining Benfica at the Club World Cup though, due to injury.
He has previously been tipped to become one of the world’s best defenders by former teammate Jan Vertonghen (CNN Portugal).
Chelsea may be hoping to pull off an ambitious attempt to complete a swap deal involving Joao Felix, with the Portuguese attacker having history with Benfica.
The Blues are facing a tough task to find a new permanent suitor for Felix after his underwhelming few months on loan at AC Milan.
