Former Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given has made a claim that a lot of Chelsea and Liverpool supporters are likely to disagree with.
Given thinks one player at his old side would have no problem winning a starting position at either Chelsea or Liverpool.
Liverpool are Premier League champions, while Chelsea have a squad that may be capable of challenging for the title one day. The club’s new No.10 Cole Palmer is just one phenomenal footballer currently on their books.
Given, though, is confident that one attacker who could be about to leave City is good enough to play for either outfit.
Shay Given claims Jack Grealish would start for Chelsea
Jack Grealish is expected to depart the Etihad this summer, and the 29-year-old would walk into Chelsea’s first XI, according to Given.
Speaking to the Metro about Grealish, the retired shot-stopper said: “I wouldn’t want to name clubs but at the same time I think he walks into any team in the country, that even includes Liverpool or Chelsea or anyone.
“I think he just needs to be given a batch of games to show how good he is back in that central position and not out wide.”
Turning 30 in September, it is highly unlikely that Chelsea will make a move for Grealish, who happens to be a fan of one Blues legend.
Grealish picked Eden Hazard when asked who was the better player out of the Belgian and Neymar last year. It would be a shock, though, if Grealish got an opportunity to follow in Hazard’s footsteps and play for Chelsea.
Whatever the case, it does look like the England international will be leaving Chelsea’s Premier League rivals after making just seven starts for them in the top flight last term.
Why Chelsea shouldn’t sign Jack Grealish
As harsh as it may sound, Grealish has barely done anything at City after a £100m move to the club in 2021.
Grealish’s output has not been great, while the attacking midfielder does not even beat defenders the same way he used to at Aston Villa.
Jack Grealish’s 2024/25 stats | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
Premier League | 20 | 1 | 1 |
Champions League | 6 | 1 | 0 |
FA Cup | 5 | 1 | 3 |
Carabao Cup | 1 | 0 | 1 |
Total | 32 | 3 | 4 |
Ultimately, there is not a single Chelsea or Liverpool fan who would agree with Given’s statement. And if you were either club, you would probably be staying far away from Grealish, especially on his current wages.
