Nigeria beat Jamaica 5-4 on penalties to clinch the Unity Cup over the weekend, and former Super Eagles forward Julius Aghahowa has lauded the team.

The Super Eagles lead twice in the game, during regulation time, but were pegged back by the Reggae Boyz.

Eventually, the contest was decided by shootouts, and Eric Chelle’s side triumphed, winning the invitational tournament for a record third time.

Reacting to the triumph, Aghahowa who played for Nigeria 32 times, urged the team to build on the performance.

Speaking with Brila.net, the 43 year-old said the games of the tournament would offer Chelle a good opportunity to identify areas of strength and weakness in his squad.

‘I actually expect that opportunities like this would be taken quite seriously. We know it’s a friendly tournament, but in International football where Coaches don’t have the luxury of time to work with their players, this is a good platform.’

‘The Super Eagles coach should use the two games played in the Cup to assess the areas of improvement in the team and build on from there.’

Nigeria is expected to return to action during the international window in June, where they have a scheduled friendly against Russia on June 6, at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.
