Chelsea could be without a home for a while if they decide to redevelop Stamford Bridge.

Increasing the size of the current Stamford Bridge is still one option for Chelsea, according to The Sun.

Buying land and building a new stadium somewhere else is an alternative, though that will not be easy due to the Chelsea Pitch Owners.

It means redeveloping Stamford Bridge is probably the most likely outcome. However, if the club are to do that, The Sun’s report claims that the team could have to spend six whole years away from their current home.

Chelsea’s stadium is currently smaller than all of their rivals, while even West Ham United now have a bigger ground than them following their move from Upton Park to the London Stadium.

Chelsea need a larger stadium

At some point, Chelsea will need to increase the amount of home supporters they can host.

With Stamford Bridge’s capacity lower than that of the Emirates, Old Trafford and Anfield to name a few other stadiums in the Premier League, Chelsea have really fallen behind their rivals when it comes to gate receipts.

Blues supporters will not care too much, but the business men at the club, namely the owners, will. The above is obviously an important source of revenue.

Right now, though, what fans will be concerned about is what is happening on the pitch. And this season, they would say nothing good.

Mauricio Pochettino‘s men are 11th in the Premier League table and are set to miss out on Champions League football once again.

That is another financial blow for the club and further shows why they need a bigger stadium. Simply put, a larger ground means more revenue and that will soften the blow a bit whenever Chelsea cannot make it into Europe’s elite competition. However, it looks like it could be a while before the Blues have a 60,000-seat home.
