Officers have been assembled from multiple units to form a new specialist squad, Operation Whiskey Legion, which rolled out today.

The objective of this operation is to flood crime hotspots with as many officers as possible, targeting vehicle theft, property crime, robbery, assault and domestic violence.

Whiskey Legion officers will also target the transport network, in particular buses and train stations.

Deputy Commissioner Cheryl Scanlon said locals would see an increased police presence in public places, with the aim of making people feel safe.

“We’re very interested in high risk, high harm individuals so those individuals that cause the most harm in the community are front and centre of those that we are interested in targeting,” Scanlon said.

Officers headed to Logan and Ipswich first.

“Both districts are quite unique in the crime that occurs here and the issues that they have to address, particularly for us here in Ipswich,” District Officer Jim Munckton said.

Highway Patrol officers will also be intercepting vehicles and conducting random alcohol and drug tests as part of the plan.

Operation Whiskey Legion will be conducted in other areas across the state in the coming weeks.
