Chelsea could face competition from Newcastle United this summer for one “exceptional” player.

This season has not been a good one for either club.

Chelsea are currently 11th in the Premier League table, while Newcastle find themselves in eighth.

A few years ago, the latter would have been delighted with where they are now. However, having qualified for the Champions League last season, remaining in Europe’s elite competition would have been the aim.

As for Chelsea, they are obviously nowhere near there, and it now looks like both clubs could turn to the transfer market this summer to give themselves a better chance of finishing in the top four next term.

Newcastle United reignite interest in Chelsea target

The Blues continue to be linked with several players, with quite a few of them being strikers.

For example, representatives from the club have reportedly been watching Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres all season.

There has also been talk about Chelsea being keen on Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. Journalist Dean Jones recently claimed that they have an interest in the 25-year-old.

However, according to the Daily Mail, Newcastle have reignited their past interest in Ramsdale and could make a move to sign him in the summer.

One report from talkSPORT at the end of last year suggested that Ramsdale could cost £50m. His manager Mikel Arteta says he has been “exceptional” since losing his spot in the team to David Raya.

Can Chelsea beat Newcastle to Aaron Ramsdale’s signature this summer?

It is not impossible, but Newcastle should fancy their chances if it is a choice between them and the Blues.

Newcastle are probably going to finish higher than Chelsea and possibly in a European spot, while Mauricio Pochettino‘s side look set for another season without midweek football.

Ramsdale may also not want to upset Arsenal supporters by moving to one of their London rivals, though most of them would surely understand if he did decide to join Chelsea.

It is quite clear that the England international is not going to get game time at the Emirates.
