Back in May, the Andy Lane-inspired Young Sherlock Holmes novels were ordered to series by Amazon Prime Video.
Colin Firth is the latest to join the ensemble cast about the beloved British detective.
Hero Fiennes Tiffin (After) is set to play the lead role, with Joseph Fiennes and Natascha McElhone as his parents and Zine Tseng as Princess Gulun Shou’an.
Fiennes Tiffin and Guy Ritchie have worked together before on the 2024 film The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
Firth has been cast as Sir Bucephalus Hodge, with further character details yet to be revealed.
Firth is an Oscar and Golden Globe-winning actor for his role in the 2010 film The King’s Speech. From his works on Bridget Jones and Mamma Mia, to A Single Man and Kingsman, Firth has seemingly done it all.
The official description for the series shares how it follows the beginning of the detective story.
“At age 19, Sherlock Holmes is disgraced, raw, unfiltered, and unformed, when he finds himself caught up in a murder mystery at Oxford University which threatens his freedom. Diving into his first-ever case with a wild lack of discipline, Sherlock manages to unravel a globe-trotting conspiracy that will change his life forever.”
Ritchie, director and executive producer, also worked on the 2009 Sherlock Holmes film and its sequel starring Robert Downy Jr.
Amazon has confirmed the series will be eight episodes long, with a vague release date of 2025 being the aim.
Ritchie has made a statement regarding the series: “In Young Sherlock we’re going to see an exhilarating new version of the detective everyone thinks they know in a way they’ve never imagined before. We’re going to crack open this enigmatic character, find out what makes him tick, and learn how he becomes the genius we all love.”
