Since being taken over by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, a lot of things have changed at Chelsea.
That includes Chelsea‘s transfer policy, with the club signing a lot of young players these days. They are not completely against bringing in footballers in their mid-20s.
For example, this summer, the Blues have recruited Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, 25, and Tosin Adarabioyo, 26.
With links to Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, it is also not impossible that they sign another 25-year-old. There’s still time for Osimhen to join Chelsea, with it still being July.
However, former Chelsea player Jason Cundy thinks the club buying someone who turns 30 soon may be a bit too much.
Brentford’s Ivan Toney does not fit Chelsea model
Chelsea are yet to sign a centre-forward who is guaranteed to be part of Enzo Maresca‘s first team this upcoming season.
Brentford talisman Ivan Toney is still available, but with the England international turning 29 next year, Cundy doubts he is the kind of signing Boehly and Clearlake Capital want the club to make.
Discussing whether Toney could join Chelsea this summer on talkSPORT (19/07/2024 at 18:46), Cundy said: “I think the age bracket, if you look at the model the owners are coming in with, it doesn’t kind of fit that structure, does it?”
Chelsea don’t look like they want Toney right now, or it does not appear that they have made him a top target.
If that changes, though, according to GiveMeSport, it could cost £60m to get the forward out of Brentford.
Ivan Toney’s age should not be a problem
Of course, Toney is not getting any younger. But it would surely not kill Chelsea to sign one player who is getting close to 30.
The Brentford man is a top centre-forward as well, so he could be well worth it. Toney was not able to score too many goals last season as he came back from a long suspension, netting just four times. But the campaign before that, he registered on 21 occasions.
Aston Villa are interested in Toney, so Chelsea may have to get a move on. But again, they are clearly not desperate to sign him.
