It looks as if Chelsea are going to look a bit different this season under their new manager.

Enzo Maresca is looking to bring a different style of play to Stamford Bridge from what they were doing under Mauricio Pochettino, focusing far more on playing out from the back.

The players seem to have bought in to Maresca’s methods already, and supporters will no doubt be keen tonight to get their first glimpse of his football in action against Wrexham.

The fixture against lower league opposition will be the first opportunity to see which players are being earmarked to play certain roles in the side, and the goalkeeper role is no different.

It looks as if Robert Sanchez is going to be given the nod tonight, and this also looks the current plan going into next season.

Robert Sanchez thinks he suits Maresca’s style of play

The Spaniard himself has told Ben Jacobs that he believes his style of play suits exactly what the new manager is looking to bring.

He said: “I am training hard to get that position. I’ll get some minutes and we’ll go from there…

“I always think playing with my feet is my game. I feel really comfortable with what [Maresca] wants. He has explained what he wants from me and I’ve been doing it in training, and it’s looking really good at the moment.

“I know what I can bring to the team. I am positive. It’s a totally different [style]. The goalkeeper here needs to ‘have a pair’ and show a bit of personality. I think I am the right guy for that. Right now, I’m feeling really confident in training. It’s looking good.”

Doubts over Djordje Petrovic

It has been claimed there are doubts over Djordje Petrovic’s ability to feature in Maresca’s style, despite the fact he has been the number one for nearly all of 2024.

There have also been reports that the club are keen to bring in a new goalkeeper who can challenge for the number one jersey.

It was stated today that the Blues have made an official bid for Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal, however it fell quite a bit lower than his reported release clause.
