Police appeal for public assistance after man dies at Victorian roadside

It is believed a man who may have been sleeping rough was hit by a car just outside of Trafalgar in the state’s Gippsland region.

He was found at about 10.30am yesterday by a passerby at Waterloo Road near Davey Drive.

Investigators said the person who hit him would’ve known a collision occurred.

Forensic police are examining about 80 pieces of debris from the vehicle.

“In all hit-run type circumstances, we absolutely see two distinct sides of humanity — those who decide to stop and help, and those who decide to run,” Victoria Police Detective Sergeant Peter Romanis said.

The man, believed to be in his 60s, was wearing a black tracksuit top, a white chequered shirt, black tracksuit pants with two white stripes down the sides and he wasn’t wearing any shoes.

Police have contacted aged care homes and boarding houses but no one has yet been reported missing.

“Imagine if it was your friend or family, what would you expect?” Romanis said.

A man matching his description was seen at 7.10pm on Saturday, so police believe he could have died on Saturday evening or yesterday morning.

There are no CCTV cameras or homes in the area he was located so police have appealed for the public’s assistance.

So far this year 25 people have lost their lives on Victorian roads, including 10 people in the Gippsland region.
