Trae Black, 29, was found on the West Coast Highway in City Beach on Monday morning with his leg severed from below the knee.
Black was allegedly chased down by a 25-year-old work colleague in a Mazda BT-50 ute.
The 25-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken into custody.
He has been charged with one count of attempted unlawfully to kill.
”It is believed the victim was struck by the vehicle before being assaulted with a hammer,” WA Police alleged in a statement yesterday.
The West Coast Highway was covered in blood after the alleged attack.
An orthopaedic doctor used her handbag strap as a makeshift tourniquet before paramedics arrived, and later found the remains of his leg.
“Later on I found his amputated leg up on the bank, put that in a bag and provided that to paramedics,” she said.
A good samaritan also stopped to render assistance, which police say likely saved Black’s life.
Police allege a verbal altercation first broke out several hundred metres away at a construction site on Catesby Street in City Beach.
It’s understood Black fled on foot when a workmate from another site came looking for him.
Witnesses also alleged the 25-year-old took a demolition hammer to the windscreen of a parked car at the construction site.
The 25-year-old man is due to appear before the Perth Magistrates Court today.
