Chelsea were close to making a huge sale earlier in the summer, only for their player to reject the move.

Chelsea have already completed one big sale, allowing Ian Maatsen to join Aston Villa for £35m.

All in all, it has been a busy transfer window for the Blues, who recently completed the signing of Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal.

The goalkeeper is the seventh arrival at Stamford Bridge this summer. Chelsea are a club Jorgensen really likes, so he will be glad to be at the club.

In terms of outgoings, though, the Blues could have made an even bigger sale than Maatsen during this window.

Aston Villa were ready to break the bank for Conor Gallagher

As things stand, it looks like there is a good chance of Conor Gallagher moving to Atletico Madrid before the transfer market shuts.

Gallagher has given positive indications to Atletico about joining them. However, it appears that the midfielder also had the opportunity to sign for Villa.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Villa had a club-record bid for Gallagher accepted in June, but the 24-year-old opted to remain at Chelsea instead.

On X, Jacobs said: “Aston Villa also had a club-record bid accepted for Gallagher in June but he decided to stay.”

Villa’s record signing is currently Moussa Diaby after signing the winger for around £52m last year. It means Chelsea were about to get some serious money for Gallagher.

Conor Gallagher should have accepted Aston Villa move

Villa are one of the top teams in the country right now after finishing fourth in the Premier League last season, above Chelsea.

As a result, the Villans will be playing in the Champions League in the new campaign. Bearing that in mind, going to Villa Park could have been a really good move for Gallagher.

If the Englishman feels that he is in a position where he has to leave Enzo Maresca‘s squad, then Villa are a great route out.

It is a route that looks to be gone now, though, so perhaps Chelsea supporters will indeed see Gallagher join Atletico.

It is not hard to see why Diego Simeone wants him. The England international will bring energy and tenacity to his midfield.

“He has got tremendous drive,” Gareth Southgate was quoted as saying by the Evening Standard last year when discussing Gallagher.
