Chris Evans recently made headlines with his unexpected return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the film Deadpool & Wolverine.
The cameo sparked excitement among fans who fondly remember Evans’ earlier role as Johnny Storm, also known as the Human Torch, in the Fantastic Four movies.
Evans discussed the circumstances leading up to his return in a recent interview. He revealed that Ryan Reynolds, the star and co-writer of Deadpool, personally reached out to him.
“Ryan’s a buddy,” Evans shared.
“He just shot me a text saying, ‘Listen, might be a long shot, but would you have any interest in reprising something from 20 years ago?’ I said, ‘Oh my God! Of course.’”
Evans was enthusiastic about the opportunity, particularly because of Reynolds’ involvement.
He described Reynolds as having “the Midas touch” and an “invincible” sense of self-awareness, which made him feel comfortable revisiting an old character.
In Deadpool & Wolverine, Wade Wilson (Reynolds) embarks on a multiversal quest to find a replacement for Wolverine, the “anchor being” of his world.
During this journey, Deadpool encounters a version of Evans’ Johnny Storm in the Void, a place where discarded beings reside after being pruned by the TVA.
This appearance serves as a nostalgic nod to fans of the original Fantastic Four films.
Evans also reflected on the experience of wearing the Human Torch suit again.
“Those first two movies, that’s when Marvel was really still trying to find their footing.”
“So everything had to be very precise and had a lot of meetings, a lot of opinions.”
“This was a little more like, ‘Yeah, we know it. We’ve seen it,’” Evans remarked.
His return in Deadpool & Wolverine blends humour, nostalgia, and superhero action, adding a special touch to the film for longtime Marvel fans.
As the movie continues to gain attention, Evans’ cameo stands out as a highlight, bridging different eras of Marvel storytelling.
