The man alleged to have murdered schoolboy Daniel Anjorin with a samurai sword as he attacked four others is expected to enter pleas in September.

Dual Spanish-Brazilian national Marcus Aurelio Arduini Monzo, 36, appeared in court today to hear charges against him. He is alleged to have attacked 14-year-old Daniel moments after he left his house for school in Hainault, east London, on April 30.

Monzo is further accused of four counts of attempted murder, wounding with intent, possessing a katana and a tanto – long and short Japanese swords, respectively – as well as a kitchen knife and aggravated burglary.

The alleged attempted murder victims include 35-year-old dad and IT engineer Henry De Los Rios Polina, 35, and Donato Iwule who was allegedly hit with a van.

He is also charged with attempting to murder Sindy Arias and PC Yasmin Mechem-Whitfield, who is alleged to have suffered serious injuries in the attack.

He was also accused of wounding Inspector Moloy Campbell with intent as he tried to resist arrest.

Bearded Monzo, of Satanita Close, West Beckton, east London, appeared at the Old Bailey on Tuesday via video-link from HMP Belmarsh wearing a grey prison tracksuit and spoke only to confirm his name.

Monzo was due to enter pleas today but the hearing was delayed.

Judge Mark Lucraft, KC, the Recorder of London, said Monzo would next appear for a case management hearing on September 23.

A three week trial date is set for February 3 next year.

The attack is said to have unfolded just before 7am on April 30 when a van smashed into a house in Laing Close, near Hainault tube station.

Prosecutors allege that Monzo then stepped from the van and began attacking passers-by with the sword before attacking 14-year-old Daniel.

The teenager was rushed to hospital but could not survive his horrific injuries and died shortly after.

He was the youngest of three children from a local, church-going Nigerian family.

His mother Grace Anjorin, 49, is a science teacher and his father Dr Ebenezer Anjorin, 59, works as a health and safety consultant.

Arsenal supporter Daniel attended £25,000-a-year Bancroft’s School in nearby Woodford Green, the private school attended by Nottingham rampage victim Grace O’Malley-Kumar.

A post-mortem found Daniel died of sharp force trauma to the head.
