A man in New South Wales has been arrested and charged over the 2021 theft of almost a tonne of silver bullion, worth more than $1 million.
A shipment of 192 five-kilo bars of the precious metal – a total of 960kg – was being transported from Sydney to Melbourne in late November 2021 when it was stolen.
The alleged theft wasn’t noticed until the truck carrying the consignment arrived in Melbourne. Police in NSW were notified, leading to the formation of a strike force to investigate.

Almost three years later, a 40-year-old man was yesterday arrested at Wee Jasper, a small village in the Yass Valley, about 60km north-west of Canberra.

He has since been charged over the heist.

“He was taken to Yass Police Station and strike force detectives executed search warrants at Bargo and Tahmoor property seizing electronic devices and business records for forensic examination,” police said.

“The man has since been charged with larceny and armed with intent to commit indictable offence.”

The silver bullion, which was worth $1.015 million in 2021 and is now valued at $1.4 million, is still yet to be recovered.

The man is due to face court in Goulburn today.
