A cyclist has died after a hit-and-run in Queensland’s Whitsundays early this morning.

The 69-year-old local Bowen man was found unresponsive with fatal injuries on the side of the Bootooloo Road and Wheelers Lane intersection, off the Bruce Highway.

Police believe the man left home at 4.15am before a motorist found him unresponsive at 4.40am.

Early evidence suggests the man was struck by a vehicle which then fled the scene.

The man died from the injuries he sustained.

“There’s a range of issues that we need to consider in relation to this, it could be speed, it could be inattention, it could be a situation that is just purely an accident,” he said.

“It’s a tragic incident, we certainly expect that people involved in these sorts of accidents would remain on the scene.”

It’s understood that Bootooloo Road is a popular route for the local cycling community.

The investigation is ongoing.
