Team GB claimed their first medal of the Olympics in dramatic fashion after a calamity from an Australian diving duo.

Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen took bronze in the women’s 3m synchronised diving with a score of 302.28.

It looked as if the pair had lost out going into the final round as Australia only needed a score of 58.68 to overtake them.

But a slip from Annabelle Smith saw the Australians score 48.60, meaning Harper and Mew Jensen took home Team GB’s first medal of the Games.

It was a history-making feat for the Brits, who sealed Team GB’s first medal in women’s diving in 64 years – and their premier in the synchronised category.

This was also the first time since 2004 that Team GB picked up a medal on the first day after the opening ceremony.

A tricky third round had seen the duo plummet down the scoreboard into sixth after scoring 63.90, but they quickly improved with the following dive, scoring 71.10 to claw their way back into fourth.

China’s Yani Chang and Yiwen Chen eased to gold with a consistent performance that saw them finish first across the five rounds, while USA pair Sarah Bacon and Kassidy Cook claimed silver.

Meanwhile, Tom Daley was spotted knitting this morning as he watched his fellow divers, just two days before he begins his campaign for Olympic gold.

The Team GB star took some time to unwind ahead of his curtain-raiser in the 10m synchronised diving with partner Noah Williams on Monday.

The 30-year-old looked proud of his work as he showed off the woolly jumper with the name ‘Daley’ knitted onto the back.
