Apple TV+ has officially released the official trailer for Taika Waititi’s Time Bandits series.

The series, which is a reimagining of Terry Gilliam’s classic 1981 movie, stars Waititi alongside Friends‘ Lisa Kudrow and Jemaine Clement – among others.

In the reimagined series, Kudrow plays Penelope, the leader of the group of thieves.

Additional changes include the six dwarfs being replaced by a diverse cast, with the trailer revealing that dwarfs will be playing a completely different role altogether.

As of the time of writing, the trailer’s like-to-dislike ratio shows around 3,000 likes against 17,000 dislikes.

Due to Apple TV+ disabling the comments, it’s unclear what kind of reactions the reimaging had conjured up from viewers.

However, thanks to additional social media platforms, not all reactions went unnoticed as the streamer’s trailer post on X (Twitter) provides a better insight into what people are saying.

“Something major seems missing. Can’t quite put my finger on it, however diminutive it may be. Also, is Lisa Kudrow just playing Phoebe from Friends in this?” one asked.

“Man, I just don’t think this is getting at what made the original special at all. The cinematography and production design is a major downgrade from the original, and none of the real mean humour that it had too. The original was frightening! This is a marvel-ised version,” another added.

“Weirdly regressive of Waititi to get rid of the Little People from the gang and make them all average size. Also loses part of the charm of the OG, that everything is from the POV height of a child,” a third wrote in response to the trailer.

Not all were against the look of the new take on the 1981 classic, with one responding: “This looks so good and charming. Is this a TV show or a movie?”

“Re-subscribing for this, looks so good,” another added.

However, it’s fair to say the response has been fairly divided so far.

Time Bandits comes to Apple TV+ on July 24.

Despite the mixed reactions, all will be able to gather their full opinions once the show becomes available to watch on the streaming platform.
