Chelsea followed up their 2-2 draw with Wrexham in their pre-season tour of the United States with a 4-1 loss against Celtic on Saturday.

New Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca went with a strong line-up, with the likes of captain Reece James, Wesley Fofana and Christopher Nkunku all starting.

There was also a place in the team for Robert Sanchez, who could soon find himself under real pressure, as Filip Jorgensen’s switch to Chelsea is almost complete.

In the end, though, the Spaniard could not help prevent his side from losing 4-1 to Celtic.

Here is how each Chelsea player fared in Maresca‘s second unofficial game in charge:

Robert Sanchez – 7

Made a nice save with his foot in the first 10 minutes of the game before following that up with another not too long after. Probably could not do much about Celtic’s first goal. He made another unbelievable save just before the half-hour mark.

Reece James – 6

Gave Chelsea supporters a taste of what they are likely to see under Maresca as he inverted into midfield from the right-back position. It did not really work out, though, with the Blues far from convincing in the middle of the park.

Wesley Fofana – 6

Really confident on the ball for someone who has been injured for so long. Did not have as much trouble on his side as Benoit Badiashile and Levi Colwill did on theirs.

Benoit Badiashile – 4

Played a very sloppy pass in the 25th minute, not the kind of thing Maresca will want to see. Did it again in the second half and was made to pay for it this time. Defensively, the Frenchman and Colwill have seen better days.

Levi Colwill – 5

Struggled on the left side alongside Badiashile, with a lot of Celtic’s attacks coming down that flank. His manager would have liked to have seen the 21-year-old and Chelsea’s other defenders close down Matt O’Riley quicker for Celtic’s first goal.

Romeo Lavia – 5

Some of his passing was wayward but took some nice touches in midfield and tried to drive with the ball. Overall, did not show enough authority in the middle of the park.

Carney Chukwuemeka – 6

Showed strength on the ball and had a good opportunity to score early in the first half. Made a few threatening runs into the box, which Noni Madueke tried to find.

Noni Madueke – 7

Direct as ever on the right flank and put in a good ball into the box for Nkunku. Combined pretty well with Chukwuemeka but end product was lacking.

Christopher Nkunku – 6

Had a good header saved before the fifth minute but could have done better with another shot shortly afterwards. It was encouraging to see Nkunku get into goalscoring opportunities so early, while he pressed well and converted his penalty.

Mykhailo Mudryk – 4

Was pretty quiet in the first 15 minutes of the game and never grew into the match. The Ukrainian needs to try and get involved in games the same way Madueke does.

Marc Guiu – 7

Looked very sharp when the game started with a few quality touches and managed to get multiple shots away, even after falling to the ground. The 18-year-old is coming across as quite a smart and technical forward.

Substitutes

Tosin Adarabioyo – 5

Was in some unusual positions for a central defender when Chelsea were out of possession. Was killed by one ball just before Celtic’s fourth.

Lesley Ugochukwu – 5

Played a nice back heel pass after coming on in the second half. Did not really influence the game, though.

Raheem Sterling – 6

Probably did more in one minute than Mudryk did in 45 after hitting the post straight after he came on. But he really should have found Madueke easily in the box after the hour mark instead of overhitting his low ball. Redeemed himself by winning a penalty.

Malo Gusto – 6

Did not take him too long to get involved in the game after being introduced to the match, making a slide tackle around his box.

Andrey Santos – 5

Like Ugochukwu, was not really able to do much during the game as a second-half substitute but did manage to show a bit of strength on the ball.

Renato Veiga, Angelo, Lucas Bergstrom, Tyrique George – N/A

All came on with Chelsea 4-0 down and the game already dead. No real chance to make a difference in the match.
