Darwin Nunez looks set to take over Liverpool’s No.9 shirt next season and Reds fans believe this could be the making of him.

Roberto Firmino wore the number on Merseyside since 2017, but now that the Brazilian has left the club, fans have been wondering who would take his place.

Now though, it appears last summer’s £85million signing Nunez could inherit the shirt.

Football Authentica posted a snap of ready-to-print No.9s and ‘Darwin’ shirts, leading fans to believe this would suggest the 23-year-old will take that squad number for the 2023/24 campaign.

Should Nunez get that shirt, he’ll join a long list of Liverpool icons that have worn it, including Reds legend and former striker Fernando Torres.

It’s also the number Nunez wore during the latter stages of career at Benfica before he made his Premier League switch.

Nunez was given the No.27 shirt in what was overall a mixed first season with Liverpool, netting 15 goals in all competitions.

But now Reds fans are convinced he’ll be as prolific as he was in his last season in Portugal – which saw him score 34 goals in 41 games – should he become the club’s No.9.

“New number. New player. New monster,” one fan wrote in reaction to Football Authentica’s image doing the rounds on social media.

Meanwhile another said: “New number would give his confidence a world of good. Better number, more responsibility and a fresh number could help him. Only downside is people who bought his old number lol.”

And one fan even thinks his new shirt will lead him to match Manchester City superstar Erling Haaland’s tally of 36 Premier League goals in 35 games.

“Darwin Nunez outscoring Haaland next season,” they wrote. “I will be there no matter what.”

No pressure, Darwin!
