Chelsea are set to sign a new goalkeeper before the transfer window closes despite already having Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic.

Last season, Djordje Petrovic and Robert Sanchez were Chelsea‘s first and second-choice goalkeepers, and the club only brought them in during the 2023 transfer window.

Enzo Maresca likes Sanchez, but it now looks like there is no guarantee that the Spaniard will be the No.1 for the 2024/25 season.

As for Petrovic, the arrival of a new shot-stopper, which now seems highly likely, could easily put his future at Stamford Bridge in jeopardy.

He finished the previous campaign as the Blues’ first-choice goalkeeper, making just over 30 appearances in all competitions.

Chelsea want to sign a new goalkeeper

While Maresca may like Sanchez, the Italian seems to have some doubts about him and perhaps Petrovic as well.

Had that not been the case, Chelsea would probably not be in the market for a new goalkeeper.

However, according to Fabrizio Romano, they are. And the transfer expert has explained why on his YouTube channel.

Discussing Chelsea’s current keeper situation, he said: “Chelsea have decided to bring in a new goalkeeper. It’s a really strong and concrete possibility.

“Why [are they] doing this? Because Chelsea, at the moment, want a new goalkeeper who can play and do [a] good job in distribution. This is the crucial part.”

Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic in trouble

It remains to be seen who Chelsea go on to sign for the position between the sticks but, at this point, you would have to fear for Sanchez and Petrovic.

In previous months, Chelsea have been linked with a couple of Premier League goalkeepers. Chelsea are fans of Jordan Pickford, for example, so he is potentially one man who could come in this summer.

Currently England’s No.1, a shot-stopper of his profile will not join the Blues to be a bench player under the new Chelsea manager.

Someone like Pickford is going to want to start every game, meaning that Sanchez or Petrovic would have to settle for the bench, while the other leaves west London to get more game time.

It is not really a good look for the club and their recruitment staff, having only signed both players a year ago, but it is the situation they now find themselves in.
