Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has now had his first look at the squad he will be going into next season with.

The Blues played out a 2-2 draw with Wrexham earlier this week, with nearly all of the squad getting 45 minutes to show what they can do.

A number of players featured in positions they will not have been too familiar with. Ben Chilwell was playing in centre-back during the second half.

The system Maresca is looking to bring to Stamford Bridge was on display, and it relied on the Blues building up with the ball from the back.

Maresca warns Chelsea fans they will make mistakes

It looks as if the Italian is keen to ease supporters fear over the risky strategy, and according to journalist Kieran Gill, he admitted there will be times that mistakes they make will lead to conceding goals.

He said: “Enzo Maresca told us after last night’s 2-2 draw with Wrexham there will be times this season when Chelsea concede goals playing out from the back. Happened to Pep Guardiola when he took over Manchester City in 2016 and improved from there. Teething problems to be expected.”

Those who are starting in defence are going to need to be used to having the ball at their feet, and the upcoming friendlies will give Maresca the best idea of who is suited to this.

Wesley Fofana looking to make comeback

Passing is undoubtedly a strength of Levi Colwill’s, and he will certainly be looking to force himself into the side who take on Manchester City on the first day of the season.

The rest of the places are up for grabs, and one player who will be hoping fitness doesn’t stop him from taking part is Wesley Fofana.

The Frenchman didn’t play a minute last season after a serious knee injury, and there will be no rush to get him back to full fitness to hopefully see the problems finally leave his game.
